Tim Pat Coogan is a prolific writer on Ireland and the Irish. This work on the modern "troubles" in the North is rooted in the peace process which, since first publication, has come to fruition. Unlike many Southern commentators, Coogan has a keen sense of Irishness, not to say reality, and doesn't carry on as though the six counties were somewhere North of Greenland, or Gerry Adams Adolf Hitler fresh back from Brazil via Switzerland after successful rejuvenation treatment! On the other hand, he's always struck me as essentially a "Green" Fianna Fáiler, not in the narrow party sense but in his general approach, and it's as well to keep this in mind while reading him. The Troubles, though it suffers from a certain lack of organisation and can sometimes overwhelm one in details, is a very valuable account of the 30 years of war in the North of Ireland.
