A History of Ireland in Song |
The "Irish Diaspora" is a phrase I think introduced by Mary Robinson, former President of the South of Ireland; but despite that, it is not without value. Certainly, it is difficult to find a closer parallel with the Irish experience than the world-wide dispersal of the Jews after the fall of Jerusalem to Titus in 70 AD. This is a fascinating book which examines in detail the Irish experience of emigration throughout the world, from Newfoundland to Tasmania.
That's all I could be bothered to write! Maybe I'll do a longer review sometime, maybe I won't. You could always read Anthony McIntyre's rather unenthusiastic piece.
